Nov 29/09 - Canada - Residents across the country could soon start seeing red as municipalities begin unveiling graffiti cleanup policies to combat vandalism. This week, the Halifax Regional Municipality tabled a motion requiring property owners to be responsible for cleaning up graffiti on their property. The proposal comes on the heels of similar initiatives to clean up graffiti and stop vandals undertaken in Vancouver, Toronto and Whitehorse.

Nov 24/09 - City leaders in Franklin are expected to vote Tuesday on a controversial new law that deals with graffiti. It would make parents pay when their kids deface property. They would have to pay for the cost of removing the graffiti, plus a fine. Both the child and parent could face community service. "Parents should take responsibility for children's actions, especially destructive ones," said Franklin resident Ashley Thompson. The other part of the ordinance would make home and business owners financially responsible for cleaning up graffiti on their property even if they didn't cause it.

Nov 23/09 - Washington state -Schenck hopes the murals create a center of pride in each community, causing a ripple effect where people improve their yards, supervise kids and create overall better neighborhoods. "So it's not just that we're going out trying to get rid of a graffiti problem in one spot, we're wanting to see this spread," said Schenck. Schenck said that despite tight budgets city council is seeing the value of this program and they plan to continue painting murals all over Sunnyside.

Nov 23/09 - Florida -The work of graffiti artists in one popular section of the city was erased Monday as city crews and inmates removed graffiti on South Monroe Street. ... The city estimates that 10 to 15 sites a week are cleaned. The culprits are believed to be teenagers. “The main problem is kids not having anything to do and they start doing things like this,” said Alex Lewis, a parks and recreation supervisor.

Nov 29/09 - Australia - Paintings which come in frames, abstract art and sculpture apparently all warrant the presence of galleries; soccer, netball and cricket players are provided with designated spaces for their sport; so why is graffiti, an art form so popular it can be seen on walls in any big city on the planet, not worthy of legal walls? It’s because graffiti is the art of the underclass. To give it legitimacy is to concede that graffiti is art, not vandalism; and that those who practise it are people, not criminals. Demonising graffiti artists is like demonising refugees. It seeks to divert attention from more serious matters: like global warming; a poor public transport system; the decaying of the public education and healthcare systems; or the privatisation of electricity.
