ROW80-1 -03/01/18 -Objectives

Yes, should have been posted Wednesday, but life got in the way. Car repairs, babysitting, reading, seeing off a friend to Costa Rica, driving from Russel (MB) to Fort Nelson (BC).

I already posted my 2018 goals (similar to 2017's), but I'll repeat them here to show how I tried to derive some SMART objectives for this round. To help set these, I'll be journaling at the end of each day, to record how I did, and at the start, to plan it out a bit. As opposed to just trying to catch up 3-4 times a week.
  • Write - Because I do enjoy it
    • Start with the objective of 1 h/d, early in the day, to develop the habit again. 2-3 would be better eventually.
    • I'll first focus on finishing Holly's -three week FF course. I started just before the Christmas rush (bad move) so I am still just at the end of the week one assignment.
    • Finish writing my 2017 NaNo attempt, The Game. I have only about 6000 words so far, but I continue to adding more and more structure, so this should go a little easier. I hope.
  • Write better - mostly by reading about how to write, and getting constructive feedback. And by helping others to write, via specific feedback or just general encouragement.
    • My big source of this info is a series of writerly blogs, that all post regularly. Maybe 6-8 total a day, which doesn't seem a lot, but my problem is letting it slide and getting wayyyyy behind. Objective  -stay current. Note: I often jump from the blog to my WIP to leave a reminder to implement a particular gem I find in these blogs, so a bit more editing gets done too.
    • I'm in two writers groups, with regular meetings - Objective will be to attend and network.
  • Publish/market  - We publish partially for the glory and bags of money, but also for the feedback and increased marketability. And marketing itself can cover things like book signings and flogging to libraries and social media awareness.
    • After the FF course, I should have 10 FF that I can do as an ebook and self publish. Or, send out to individual online journals. I'll add that objective after.
  • Read with purpose - there are lots of good/great books out there, but not enough time for them all. So I need to focus on well-written books, and note why they are well written. As opposed to skimming through my mystery and sci-fi/fantasy just to escape other tasks.
    • Objective - read and review a book a week. That may need to be done as a limit, as I can read more, but at the expense of other things.
  • Better health - My BP control is improving, but more exercise would be okay. I'm already losing a bit of weight, which is a good thing, but I think a fit-bit would help. Just a cheap one.
    • Get a fit bit.  Ordered Wednesday, arrived today, Thursday.
    • Use it. Start w 2000 steps a day target. A far distance from the recommended 10,000, but I'm often tempted to stay in all day and work/read/game, etc. Habits.
  • Stay social - That's a given, what with strolls through my hood, visits to local cafes and bars, and all my grandkids being in Ottawa. Plus frequent hookups with my girlfriend.
    • Again, limits for some of this, as I have several bars within a short stroll. Picking a less than direct route there would add to my steps. Journal and monitor, then pick an objective.
  • Have fun - I feel I need this for things like Netflix and video games. Although, maybe if streaming my truck driving gets me viewers that then buy my books, I can count that activity as being sort of writerly, right?
    • The objective here is mostly to track and keep an eye on this.
  • Chores - I added this after 'have fun', to capture bigger jobs, like take down Christmas stuff, sort through photos, file papers. This will be another time-based activity, but I'm hoping that putting it here on my list will remind me to bite off a chunk each day.

Good to hear you're making progress with things like your BP and adding steps. And though you've stalled in a few areas, you aren't letting that lie but picking up the load and moving forward again.

I don't know if it would appeal to you, but there is another blog hop of readers who post what they're presently reading at the moment, usually with a note of why they like it or don't, etc. Like a short form review... It happens on Wednesdays. It may give you come more "good books" to look at, as well as an eye into what readers are looking for (that's one of the things I'm definitely getting out of following it).

Sounds like an interesting blog hop - link?

Wow I'm impressed just reading your goals. I'm more of a short-term goals person so I always admire people who aim that high ! Good luck with everything. =)
