The woman was being abused, and obviously had been for a long time. Her explanation of a 'rash' sounds just like that of a chronically abused wife. There was probably little for the conductor to do; although, he could have been a bit more sensitive to the situation. Then again, the husband slipping him a bit of cash would tend to lessen his concern.</p>
<p>I don't know how willing I'd be to go back and apologize, and especially to pay for their dinner. He really has nothing to apologize for, but I suppose to keep peace, it might not be a bad idea. However, considering the remark at the end, he might be better off just finding a seat in another car, and avoiding the couple for the rest of the trip.</p>
<p>This was a great story, with an ending that sneaks up on you and puts ITS hand on your shoulder in the doorway of a moving train!</p>
