ROW80-3 08/09/2019 Distracted by Brexit
September 09, 2019
I'm still working on yesterday's Sunday check-in, watching UK Parliament live. I must say it's almost like watching a train wreck, where you're are not at a safe distance, but close enough to the tracks you might be injured. Brexit/or not will have serious implications. The US economy is also being steered toward a recession. My own province also has a populist narrow-minded leader following the same bread and circuses agenda. And Canada is heading into an election in 50 some days, with a dangerous groundswell of right-wing support - or should I say anti-current-government. People are enjoying being entertained by the clowns, but the buffoons have replaced the circus ringmasters.
Has this affected your writing? Do you head toward more dystopian stories, or are you trying to keep things more upbeat?
BTW - John Bercow, the UK Commons speaker, announced his retirement.
Status (progress shown in italics):
- Write - Because I enjoy it.
- Write new material - one Flash Fiction a week.
- Did another one for last Friday, the prompt being a needy pet - as in a mythical creature.
- Edit existing material - to send in for publication. 2h/d. I did work on my draft novel a bit. Not enough. I need a way to motivate myself.
- Write new material - one Flash Fiction a week.
- Write better - Read about how to write, and get constructive feedback.
- Series of writerly blogs. Objective, to stay current. Doing okay.
- Write regularly - set a FF challenge a week. Set a challenge to write about sending someone, or something, off to school.
- Other - Masterclass - Try the James Patterson one? Soon.
- Publish/market
- Amazon Marketing Services Campaigns on KDP - Dump this? I did get some sales a while back - possibly through this. I also am promoting my books via business cards to people I meet, and via online in my games and other posts. I'm not convinced this really works, and am suspicious of Amazon's prompts to nudge limits up and up.
- Give away stories. Yes. Found a few fane, so give them repeats.
- Send in one story a week to a publication. Nope, nothing sent.
- Read with purpose
- Objective - read and review a book a week. I read Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn. This was a second attempt, and I liked it, and finished it. Another single day read.
- Health
- Fitbit step Objective - 7 day average goal 4000. I started using the FitBit Coach and tracking walks. My average is 3600. and new goal is 4000.
- Set sleep target to 7 hours, starting at midnight. Doing well at this, got it for last 7 days!
- Eat better . And lose weight. Less visits to my local, no beer/wine at home to tempt me, smaller servings. No loss. But no gain!
- Stay social - That's a given, what with walking about, visits to local cafes and bars, and all my grandkids being in Ottawa. See above. Less bars, more walking. Girlfriend was here, but with terrible cold.
- Have fun - Gaming, Netflix - both indoors. Outdoors?
- Netflix/Amazon - Too many shows, not enough time.
- Gaming - 8:30-10:30 schedule. Lots, but mostly one game.
- Vacation - Do at least mini-trips. Thinking. Would have to be solo.
- Chores - Housecleaning binge.
